Carabao Cup third round: Liverpool see off Spurs 3-1, Arsenal get past Ipswich with Dowman brace - as it happened

A screamer from Dominik Szoboszlai helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Tottenham, while Arsenal got past Ipswich 4-2 to reach the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Spurs got back into the game after Conor Gallagher's back-post header and threatened to score an equaliser before Szoboszlai's stunner to wrap things up. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Max Dowman scored a brace for the Gunners -- with his first coming just seven minutes into the game.

Peterborough beat Barnsley on penalties, while there were wins for Fulham and Brentford elsewhere.

There was Richarlison for Spurs after Roberto de Zerbi confirmed that the Brazilian striker was not to be included in the squad travelling to Merseyside, prompting the player to post a "crying" emoji in response to the news on social media.

While their scoring woes in the Premier League continue, they cruised to this stage of the competition after defeating Charlton 5-1 at home in the second round, as Sávio came on and scored on his debut.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal got a bye to round three as they are playing in Europe this year. Ipswich got past the seemingly crisis-stricken Leicester City on Aug. 26 as Marcelino Núñez hit a brace, complementing a respectable start to the league season, in which they have won and lost two each.

Mikel Arteta may have this competition lower in his priority list for the season, with the Gunners defending their first top-flight title since 2003-04, and hoping to go one further in the Champions League.

Any third round matches will head straight to penalties, with extra time not in operation until the semifinal stage.
