Ruben Amorim ready to 'adapt' tactics after AC Milan fall to Benfica defeat

AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim has said he is willing to "adapt" his tactics after his side fell to a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Benfica in the Europa League.

Goals from Dodi Lukébakio and Jakub Kaminski consigned the Italian side to defeat on their return to European competition after a season away, meaning that -- after draws against Juventus and Lazio in Serie A -- Milan are now three games without a win.

The former Manchester United boss -- who joined Milan in June -- faced criticism during his time in England for his perceived unwillingness to move away from a 3-4-2-1 formation, which some felt did not suit the United squad he had at his disposal. Milan have begun the season playing with a similar system.

"I change all the time, we need to start with a base, we have two months of work," Amorim told Sky Sports Italia.

"We lost tonight, but we will find the solutions to adapt to these games, because we need to create an idea, but we also need to win, so of course we can adapt."

Under Massimiliano Allegri, who Amorim replaced in the summer, Milan played a 3-5-2 formation but often moved to a 4-3-3 within games.

"This conversation of my idea is to play football," Amorim said on Wednesday night. "To do that, we need to play the ball, but we are creating more problems for ourselves when we have the ball than when the opponent has it.

"We are trying to create the routines to have more possession in the box, we had some in the second half, but we are not creating, we lack creativity near the box.

"In the first half, when we conceded the goal, we totally lost control of what we were meant to be doing, we wanted to do it all so fast and without quality.

"If we look at the game, when we have the ball is when we need to be prepared for the danger, because we lose it [in] dangerous situations for our goal."

Wednesday's match was the second in a row in which Milan have gone two goals behind.

In Saturday's draw with Lazio, Amorim's side were able to fight back with a brace from Diego Moreira halftime substitute Diego Moreira. But against Benfica, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was equal to everything Milan threw at him.

"I don't know if it's a mental issue, but it's the second match in a row where the first half we are not in the game," Amorim added.

"We cannot concede these goals, we need to score first to take the game to a different level, because we don't create many chances."
