Real Sociedad 1-2 Bournemouth: Kluivert, Rayan goals fire Cherries to historic European win - as it happened

Bournemouth marked their European debut with a 2-1 away win at Real Sociedad after two first-half goals proved enough in San Sebastián.

Justin Kluivert's opener was initially disallowed, but given after VAR confirmed he was onside -- before Rayan latched onto a superb ball from Alex Scott to make it two just eight minutes later.

And while Sergio Gómez got one back for the hosts as his cross beat teammates and defenders into the bottom-left corner, Marco Rose's men held on against a late onslaught to take the three points.

Marco Rose's side went to Spain unbeaten in their past four matches in all competitions, although they are still searching for their first Premier League victory of the campaign.

Bournemouth followed draws against Everton and Newcastle with a 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Lincoln City before drawing 2-2 with Brentford on Saturday.

Sociedad, meanwhile, have endured an inconsistent start to their LaLiga campaign. Pellegrino Matarazzo's men have won two of their opening six league matches and were beaten 3-0 at home by Atlético Madrid on Sunday, leaving them 12th in the table heading into their European opener.

It was a historic night for the visitors, who were playing in League Two as recently as 2010 before a historic rise which saw them first promoted to the Premier League in 2015. While they were relegated in 2020, the Cherries returned to the top flight two seasons later, before securing their place in Europe in May.

Tonight's hosts are considerably more accustomed to continental competition and return to the Europa League after a season away. The Basque club reached the round of 16 in 2024-25, where they were eliminated by Manchester United, and have competed in Europe in five of the past six seasons.
