European Golden Shoe: Who's leading Raphinha, Mbappé, Haaland in race for top goal award?

Having made a fantastic start to the 2026-27 campaign, Raphinha has -- perhaps against the odds -- emerged as one of the most fearsome strikers in Europe this season after moving in from the wing to play in a central role for Barcelona.

In fact, Barça's club captain and makeshift center forward is firmly among the favorites to win the 2026-27 European Golden Shoe, which is awarded to the continent's top marksman every season.

Occupying the spot formerly occupied by two-time Golden Shoe winner Robert Lewandowski, who left Barça to join MLS side Chicago Fire over the summer, Raphinha has already racked up 12 goals in just seven LaLiga games including back-to-back hat tricks in his past two outings, scored just four days apart.

It might be early days, but the Brazil international has so far comfortably outscored high-profile rivals such as Erling Haaland (five goals in five games), Kylian Mbappé (seven in seven) and last season's Golden Shoe winner Harry Kane (three goals in four games) at the first international break of the season.

That said, there is currently one player above Raphinha in the race to claim the 2026-27 Golden Shoe award.

Who is leading the European Golden Shoe race?

The one player across all of Europe's top divisions who is beating Raphinha in the scramble for the 2026-27 Golden Shoe is Joseph Ede Oloko. The striker has been scoring goals at a phenomenal rate for in Latvia's top flight, the Virslīga, firstly on loan at Tukums 2000 and then back at parent club FK Liepāja.

Oloko has netted 25 goals in 27 league games to top the scoring charts in Latvia. The 25-year-old also has five more games to add to his season tally with the league set to conclude in early November.

His goal-scoring exploits this year have earned him a first senior callup for Benin in this international break. Following Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Mauritania, Oloko's first involvement with the national team will conclude with a trip to Buenos Aires for a friendly that will serve as Lionel Messi's farewell match for Argentina.

While he may have scored more than double the amount of goals, Oloko is only a hair's breadth ahead of Raphinha in the Golden Shoe ranking thanks to the points-based coefficient system that is used to calculate the leaderboard. In fact, he's leading the way by just a single point.

How the European Golden Shoe award works

While the Golden Shoe Award is nominally awarded to the player with the most goals scored in the top division of a European national league, it's not quite as simple as that. To help level the playing field across the continent, a points-based coefficient system is used to calculate the leaderboard. Rather than the outright number of goals scored by an individual player, the overall Golden Shoe ranking is decided by assigning a difficulty multiplier to goals based on the perceived competitiveness of the league in question.

For example, the system dictates that any goals scored in one of Europe's "Big Five" leagues are more difficult to score, so therefore a player's goal tally is multiplied by a factor of two and converted into points.

Goals then scored in European league competitions further down the coefficient rankings (leagues ranked between 6-22 according to UEFA's coefficients) are multiplied by a factor of 1.5, whereas goals scored in leagues thereunder (22 and below) are multiplied by a factor of 1.

Last season, England captain Kane won the award after topping the chart with his 36 Bundesliga goals scored for Bayern Munich in 2025-26 earning him 72 points.

The current top 10 European Golden Shoe rankings

This means that Raphinha's haul of 12 goals for Barcelona in LaLiga this season equate to a current Golden Shoe tally of 24 points. By comparison, the next major "Big Five" stars on the leaderboard are Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, who both sit in joint-21st place with seven goals (ergo 14 points) apiece to their respective names.

Due to the Latvian top division's low-level standing in the UEFA league coefficient, Oloko's 25 goals are multiplied by a factor of 1 for Golden Shoe purposes, meaning he commands a 25-point total as things stands. He is therefore just one point ahead of his Barça counterpart.

This is also the reason that the majority of the Golden Shoe leaderboard is populated by players from "summer leagues" such as the domestic Scandinavian competitions, many of whom play their season from March to November to avoid the worst of the inclement weather in their countries.

Those players get a major head start over their fellow Golden Shoe candidates given that they have already played the majority of their season, whereas players from the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, etc., are only a few games into their domestic schedule and may take several months to close the gap.

Still, if Raphinha continues to score at his current rate, he could be top of the leaderboard before his counterparts in northern Europe have hung up their boots for the winter.
