Why are England playing four games in 11 days? Extended international break explained

In their first return to action since this summer's World Cup, England will be dealing with a jam-packed schedule.

The international break is longer than usual this time around and will now last for three weeks, starting in late September and stretching into early October.

England will be participating in the UEFA Nations League during the break.

To kick off their 2026-27 Nations League campaign, the Three Lions will face the reigning world champions Spain, as well as Croatia and Czechia -- they will play Czechia twice.

What has changed with the upcoming international break?

Previously, there were four international breaks across the Premier League season -- these took place in September, October, November and March.

Those breaks lasted nine days and countries would play two matches per break.

Now, the September and October breaks have been merged into one longer window lasting 16 days -- from Sep. 21 until Oct. 6 and countries will play four matches in this period.

The November and March international breaks will remain the same length as before.

These changes were unanimously approved by the FIFA Council in 2023.

The Premier League will be paused at the end of Matchweek 5 on Sep. 20 and Matchweek 6 will recommence on Oct. 10.

England will play four Nations League fixtures during this period.

What is England's schedule?

England's first match after the 2026 World Cup is against Spain -- who beat Argentina in the final to win the competition -- and will take place at Wembley on Sep. 26. 

Three days later, on Sep. 29, England will take on Czechia at the Fortuna Arena in Prague.

Four days later, they host Croatia at Wembley on Oct. 3.

Finally, Tuchel's side will then face Czechia again -- this time at Wembley on Oct. 6.

That means there are a lot of tight turnarounds for the Three Lions as they play four matches in just eleven days. 

After this three-week international break, England players will then return to their clubs until early November -- when the familiar two-week international break will return. 

What's behind the change to the international break?

There are a number of reasons as to why the upcoming international break is longer than usual. 

One key factor in the change is the fact that the 2026 World Cup final was the latest date for a summer World Cup since 1966. Spain beat Argentina on July. 19 -- just weeks before the beginning of a number of domestic leagues around the world, especially in Europe.

Player welfare was also a major consideration when these changes were made.

Reducing travel for players is also a key reason behind the changes. The reduction in the number of international breaks means that players will not have to travel as much from one continent to another to play in their international fixtures. 

The changes will be especially beneficial to African and south and central American players who play their club football in Europe.

The idea is also to reduce disruption to the Premier League season, by cutting the number of breaks between the start of the season and the end of the year from three to two.

This system will remain in place until 2030. 

Why does the Nations League matter for England?

Firstly, winning the Nations League would represent the first trophy for the England men's team since that famous World Cup triumph in 1966.

While the Nations League may not be as big or as important as the Euros or the World Cup, winning it would still mark a significant moment for an England side desperately seeking silverware.

Another reason that the Nations League matters for England because it is linked to qualification for Euro 2028. 

Although England -- along with Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland -- are the host nations of the next UEFA European Championship, the hosts do not automatically qualify for the competition.

There is a safety net in place, however, as UEFA have announced that two spots in the Euros will be reserved for the two best-ranked home nations that did not qualify on merit.

But the Nations League can also help to provide a path to Euro 2028.

Qualifying for the next Euros will involve 12 qualifying groups, each consisting of four or five teams. Each group winner, as well as the eight best-performing second-placed teams, will qualify for the tournament.

The remaining runners-up will then enter a playoff with the best-ranked Nations League non-qualified group winners.

Away from Euro 2028 qualifying, England are in League A of the Nations League and face top-tier competition, including Spain, and testing themselves against these opponents will provide invaluable experience for the Three Lions as they look ahead to 2028.
